Checkups & Teeth Cleaning

Video 01:01 | Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and eating balanced, healthy meals are important to maintaining a healthy smile. Regular dental visits are also extremely important to prevent and treat oral disease. Learn why regularly visiting a dentist can help keep your smile healthy for a lifetime.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are crucial to maintaining your oral health. During these visits, Dr. Ahmed can detect any issues such as gum disease or decay early on and solve them with conservative and straightforward treatment. For example, a small cavity can easily be treated with a tooth-colored filling. But if the cavity is left untreated, it eventually reaches the dental pulp and requires root canal therapy.

Dr. Ahmed will also evaluate your general oral hygiene at your routine check-ups. A professional teeth cleaning can address tartar or dental plaque, and we can also teach patients how to brush and floss properly. After the initial exam, x-rays will be taken to check for any cavities or issues that are undetectable to the naked eye.

Once the evaluation is completed, you can ask as many questions as you’d like. Our goal is to address all of your concerns and create the best treatment plan for you. For example, if you’re interested in enhancing your smile with teeth whitening or dental bonding, we can schedule a follow-up appointment to focus on turning your goals into reality.

We strongly advise patients to visit the office twice a year for their routine check-ups. These visits save you time and money in the long run by protecting your oral and overall health for years to come.

Periodontal Treatments

It’s important to keep in mind that a healthy smile isn’t just about having perfect pearly whites. For example, your gum health plays a crucial role in your oral health and can even affect your overall well-being. Gum disease can compromise the future of any dental restoration, making it absolutely essential to maintain proper oral hygiene after treatment.

Now, you may be wondering how you can keep your gums healthy? The answer is prevention. By having a good oral hygiene routine and regularly visiting the dentist for cleanings, you are protecting your periodontal health. Be sure to keep your teeth and gums free of plaque by brushing and flossing regularly. Dr. Ahmed can detect periodontal disease in its earlier stages and perform treatments such as prophylactic cleanings to address the issue promptly.

The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. The condition is reversible at this stage and all symptoms can disappear by having professional dental cleanings and good at-home maintenance. If left untreated, gingivitis can turn into gum disease which can have irreversible consequences. There are many options available to treat gum disease, but once it has progressed, it can only be managed instead of reversed. That’s why it’s vital to detect the signs early on to prevent real damage from occurring.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of periodontal disease. Common symptoms include inflamed gum tissue which may be caused by bacteria from plaque. The bacteria spreads until it reaches the gums, causing the tissue to become tender, red, swollen, and prone to bleeding.

Gingivitis can easily be addressed with gingivitis therapy. At River Park Dental, we offer this solution to all patients with signs of early gum disease. Dr. Ahmed can eliminate the cause of the disease and prevent its progress in just one dental appointment. If gingivitis is left ignored, then it becomes extremely difficult to control.

Gingivitis therapy consists of deep dental cleaning. It’s very affordable and less invasive compared to the other treatments available for worsening gum disease. We highly recommend patients take a proactive approach when it comes to gingivitis.

What are the signs of Gingivitis?

The early signs and symptoms of gum disease are easy to spot and are characterized by:

Swollen, tender, bright red gums.
Persistent halitosis (bad breath).
Spontaneous bleeding.

If you notice any of these symptoms between your dental check-ups, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Our team at River Park Dental is here to help!

Video 01:01 | If your gums are tender, swollen, or bleed easily when flossing, you may have gingivitis—the early stage of gum disease. Fortunately, gingivitis can be prevented by following a good oral health care routine and by regularly visiting a dentist. Find out more about how to reduce the risk of gingivitis and, if needed, how to treat it.

Periodontal disease

As mentioned earlier, periodontal disease is a reversible condition that can easily be treated in its early stages. However, if patients skip their routine check-ups or fail to recognize the symptoms, gum disease can rapidly progress and cause irreversible damage in the future.

Gingivitis that has progressed into later stages is known as periodontal disease. The main difference between these stages is that at this point we can only manage the disease instead of cure it. Without the proper treatment, periodontal disease can affect all the gum tissues until it reaches the bone in the final stages. When this happens, gum disease can cause displacement and even tooth loss.

Periodontal disease can be caused by multiple factors such as smoking, disease, or certain medication. However, the most common cause by far is bacteria build-up.

How to treat late-stage periodontal disease?

At River Park Dental, we advise patients with late-stage periodontal disease to undergo a procedure called “scaling and root planing”, otherwise known as SRP. SRP is the most effective treatment for periodontal disease before considering surgical treatment. The SRP procedure is a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line.

Dr. Ahmed specializes in performing SRP treatment and can use either an ultrasonic or manual scaler. More than one appointment is usually required for the best results. Antibiotics are also prescribed to manage the condition. By addressing periodontal disease, patients will improve their overall health and decrease the risk of coexisting complications such as stroke or heart disease.

Video 01:00 | Gums that are red, tender or swollen may indicate periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Because you can have periodontal disease without knowing it, it’s important to visit your dentist for periodontal screening. Discover more about how to prevent, detect and treat periodontal disease.

What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Treating periodontal disease requires a strong commitment from patients. Once the condition is under control, patients must follow a strict oral hygiene routine in order to maintain their results. Patients may also require specialized gum and bone procedures to keep their mouths as healthy as possible.

Can periodontal disease be cured?

Periodontal therapy can help manage gum disease, but the condition itself cannot be cured. That’s why prevention and staying on top of dental visits are so important. Patients will work closely with Dr. Ahmed to coordinate the best treatment plan. They will need to visit our office more often than regular patients, but this added effort is absolutely worth it to improve and protect their oral health.
