“I am a generally nervous person when it comes to dentists; I’ve had bad experiences that truly changed my perceptions of dentistry. Add on pain and discomfort… oof. I don’t look forward to any type of visit; let alone one where I know bad news is afoot. Let me just say, River Park I was probably the best experience I have ever had.”

Toothaches

At River Park Dental, we know that dealing with the pain of toothaches can be unbearable. Toothaches can be caused by a range of factors such as decay, infection, grinding, and tooth fractures. Dr. Ahmed will uncover the root of your pain and offer an immediate solution to relieve your discomfort. Minor pain such as chewing sensitivity may only need a simple solution. For pain that is persistent, more extensive treatment may be needed.

What to do when you have a toothache:

If you have a toothache, try rinsing your mouth with warm salty water. Carefully clean the area and brush or floss away any food particles that may be worsening the pain. In some cases, avoiding strenuous physical activity or sleeping with a pillow can provide some relief. Patients may also take over-the-counter painkillers if needed.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Treatment for a broken or cracked tooth depends on how severe the damage is. Dr. Ahmed will take x-rays and do a thorough exam to determine the best course of action.

Small chips and cracks can easily be addressed with dental bonding or a filling. However, teeth with more extensive damage usually require dental crowns and possibly a root canal. In rare instances, the tooth cannot be saved because the damage is too severe. In this case, an extraction followed by a dental implant is recommended to replace the tooth.

What to do when you have a broken or cracked tooth:

The first step is to save any missing pieces of the damaged tooth and rinse your mouth with warm salty water. Gently apply a piece of gauze if bleeding is present in the area. Remove it and reapply once it’s saturated, which is usually between 15-20 minutes. Use a cold compress to reduce any swelling and visit our Rocky Hill office as soon as possible.

Loose or Knocked-Out Teeth

Dental emergencies can include anything from a sore, painful tooth to a completely knocked-out tooth. Knocked-out teeth are most commonly seen from sports injuries, but can also happen on the children’s playground or from everyday accidents.

Sore teeth are usually able to heal on their own by eating soft foods and taken precautions when biting or chewing. Loose teeth usually need to be manually repositioned by a dentist and held in place with a splint for an allotted period of time. Missing teeth are a severe case and must be implanted as soon as possible. After all, the sooner the teeth are back in place, the higher the likelihood that the teeth won’t need to be replaced. If you have a missing tooth, the best course of action is to gently clean and transport it in a cup of milk or saline. Be sure to avoid water as this doesn’t preserve the tooth well.

*Misplaced teeth and lost teeth are time-dependent.
